Gayness Determined Before Birth

A study of nearly 1,000 gay and straight men has shown that the more older brothers a man has, the more likely he is to be gay:
"Bogaert found that the link between having older brothers and homosexuality was present only if the siblings were biologically related -- this relationship was seen between biological brothers who were not raised together. The amount of time that a man was reared with older brothers had no association with sexual orientation.
'These results support a prenatal origin to sexual orientation development in men and indicate that the fraternal birth-order effect is probably the result of a maternal 'memory' for male gestations or births,' Bogaert writes in his report in PNAS Early Edition."
Bogaert's theory behind the biological process:"A woman's body may see a male foetus as "'foreign', he says, prompting an immune reaction which may grow progressively stronger with each male child. The antibodies created may affect the developing male brain."
With this news there's little doubt that families with many brothers will be scrutinized (although the photos above are not meant to insinuate anything, simply to illustrate).
It is gratifying to see the mounting evidence that homosexuality is genetically determined. Said Andy Forrest, Stonewall spokesman: "It adds further weight to the argument that lesbian and gay people should be treated equally in society and not discriminated against for something that's just as inherent as skin colour."

NY Licensing Show

These are images from the NY Licensing Show, that previews a host of new movies, and I'm guessing to attract licencing deals. The Golden Compass is a movie based on a series of kid's books, and is a fantasy like Lord of the Rings. Again, New Line has stuck their next out on fantasy, I hope it pays off.

Didn't see the first Fantastic Four, but apparently it was good enough for a sequel. This time featuring the Silver Surfer, which might be a good reason to see it.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, one of my faves in the series and one I'm very excited about. Looks like Harry finally got a haircut.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.... I remember playing with them at the very end of my childhood, when they first came out. Good to see them back on the big screen, I hope they nail the CGI tho.

And lastly, Bee Movie, staring Jerry Seinfeld as a bee.... no idea about this one, but anything with Jerry should be good.

Gay Animals and Evolution

Joan Roughgarden, a transgendered professor of biology at Stanford University, has penned a fascinating-sounding book on the evolutionary role of homosexuality called Evolution's Rainbow. This month's Seed magazine features a long article on Roughgarden's theories, which center on explaining why, if homosexuality is a genetic aberration, it hasn't been bred out of all species -- instead, homosexual coupling is more the norm than the aberration when it comes to most animals. As she says, "a 'common genetic disease' is a contradiction in terms, and homosexuality is three to four orders of magnitude more common than true genetic diseases such as Huntington's disease."

Male big horn sheep live in what are often called "homosexual societies." They bond through genital licking and anal intercourse, which often ends in ejaculation. If a male sheep chooses to not have gay sex, it becomes a social outcast. Ironically, scientists call such straight-laced males "effeminate."
Giraffes have all-male orgies. So do bottlenose dolphins, killer whales, gray whales, and West Indian manatees. Japanese macaques, on the other hand, are ardent lesbians; the females enthusiastically mount each other. Bonobos, one of our closest primate relatives, are similar, except that their lesbian sexual encounters occur every two hours. Male bonobos engage in "penis fencing," which leads, surprisingly enough, to ejaculation. They also give each other genital massages.

Basically, at the end of all her theories, she's saying that their are too many animals with homosexual behaviour, and it hasn't been bred out. So homosexual activities must have a purpose... mainly keeping the social order of the group together.

Maybe if Humans accepted gay sex and relationships, we mightn't be such a violent and sexually frustrated culture.

The MPAA and South Park

The MPAA is quite funny and very precise on giving film makers precise issues with a movie that will affect what rating they give a film. These are not issues that will cause them to ban a film, merely those that will up the rating. South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut was originally rated X because of all the swearing, which would mean no cinema chain in the US would screen it.... meaning no one would have seen the movie. They following memo was sent to the MPAA to adress the issues they had with the movie.... and God is in the details....

Tamar Davis: Wet and Sticky

Tamar is Prince's new protege... her album is called "Milk & Honey", and is out in August. Why the only promo pic available for publishing looks like soft core porn is way beyond my comprehension. I sure hope it is actually milk and honey on her hands.... and not anything else.

Rest In Peace Tim Hildebrandt

If you are a geek, the Brothers Hildebrandt have influenced your life. Before Alan Lee and John Howe, Tim and Greg Hildebrandt were the go-to guys for Tolkien artwork. Their fantasy work was very childlike and innocent, which fit with many of Tolkien's themes.

Tim Hildebrandt died Sunday of complications due to diabetes at the age of 67. The Bros' official site is here, if you wish to look over their art. I've found some of my favorite pieces they've done and will post them below. Tim's eye for colors and design will be missed.

Superman is Gay?

Warner Brothers really, really, really doesn't want you to think Superman is gay. Which is rather strange, I think (apart from the costume), Superman is probably the straightest of all the superheros... he has a girl and just doesn't seem like the sensitive type. Unlike for example... Batman, has a young boy following him around, dresses in rubber and can't keep a girlfriend. I think Warner Brothers are more worried that Superman is a gay man fantasty... A straight, wholesome, country boy just waiting to be corrupted.

The main thing they are worried about is that the film has a gay director (that claims that this is the straightest character he's created), Kevin Spacey (still think he's queer and his over-the-top, camp performance in the trailers add to that), all those rumours about the size of Brandon Routh's dick and how it bulged in the skin tight costume.... of course it would, anything would in that costume. And no, I don't believe they had to make it look smaller with CGI.

Another gay connection is the casting of Ian Roberts (pictured below) as one of Lex Luthor's evil henchman. For those who don't know, Ian was a high profile, Aussie football player in the nineties, when at the pinnacle of his career, he identified as gay. He now has a boyfriend, hung up his boots, studied acting and this could well be his breakthrough role.

Anything would be better than his appearance on Blue Heelers, an Aussie cop drama, or Dancing With The Stars. I was quite suprised he was cast in Superman, I hadn't heard anything about it. Obviously its a small role that they could keep it a bit quiet.
