Copyright Explained by Disney
Professor Eric Faden of Bucknell University provides this humorous, yet informative, review of copyright principles delivered through the words of the very folks we can thank for nearly endless copyright terms.
In an age where copyright laws are getting ridiculous, this is an important film explaining when infringing copyright is allowed. When copyright was first conceived, they realised that after a period of time, material should be allowed to be copied, in order to come up with new ideas.... now, however, using copyrighted material sends you straight into a legal hell.

Contemplating Lennon

Spent the morning pouring over one of my favourite collectibles, my original Rolling Stone magazine from 1981 - the issue devoted to the death of John Lennon. A bargain I picked up at a market for $8... I'd love to get it framed one day. Its a very disturbing read - news reporting from a time when news was picked up from newsman watching other tv stations - no instant internet news.... and news was graphic -Hastings (the Lennon's doorman) triggered an alarm that summoned the police and he rushed to John's side. The anguished doorman gently removed Lennon's glasses, which seemed to be pushing in on his contorted face. He struggled out of his blue Dakota jacket and placed it over Lennon. Then he stripped off his tie to use as a tourniquet, but there was nowhere to put it. Blood streamed from Lennon's chest and mouth. His eyes were open but unfocused. He gurgled once, vomiting blood and fleshy material.
Reading this is like a time capsule - it reminds you of how much the world has changed, and still is changing. Imagine a newspaper being allowed to print the last moments of a celebrity in such a graphic manner.... the magazine is on newsprint, not a glossy page in sight. The whole edition is dedicated to John, including the last interview and photos he ever did.... not a single ad anywhere.
It makes you wonder sometimes if progress is needed....

How Far Have We Come Since Sept. 11???
In a chilling analysis of the PATRIOT Act, the ACLU points out that the new definition of "domestic terrorist" redefines any US criminal as a terrorist, exempt from due process and an open trial. "Domestic terrorists" can have their assets seized without a hearing, have their educational records pulled, and a host of other nasties. "Terrorism" is now officially meaningless: as far as the PATRIOT Act is concerned, if you do anything the government doesn't like, you're a terrorist. When you put it that way, it seems even less likely that we'll win the "war on terrorism."
Section 802 does not create a new crime of domestic terrorism. However, it does expand the type of conduct that the government can investigate when it is investigating "terrorism." The USA PATRIOT Act expanded governmental powers to investigate terrorism, and some of these powers are applicable to domestic terrorism. The definition of domestic terrorism is broad enough to encompass the activities of several prominent activist campaigns and organizations. Greenpeace, Operation Rescue, Vieques Island and WTO protesters and the Environmental Liberation Front have all recently engaged in activities that could subject them to being investigated as engaging in domestic terrorism.

Bad Sculpted Likenesses 2 :Aragorn
Here he is as the dirty ranger....
The bust from Sideshow has alot to be desired as well... it looks a little like Viggo, but what's with the sad, hang-dog expression. Strider never really looked sad in the entire trilogy really, it looks like he's lost a pet warg or something.
At last we have a "manly" portrait, where he doesn't look like his about to cry.... he looks like he could whoop some ass... but does it look like Viggo.... nup.
The is Aragorn going thru his "Fat Elvis" peroid.... yay, we've conquered the baddies, now I can eat shitloads and lounge around my courtyard. I've seen gay guys that look like this after too many years going out on the "scene" and have since settled down. Did Aragorn do too many 'party' drugs out in the wilderness?? And those little beady eyes make him look pretty suspect.
Back in ranger garb, this time made of plastic. You can just imagine him saying, "God, I'm sooooo depressed, will they ever get me to look anything like Viggo?"
Rumour has it that Viggo refused to have his likeness sculpted on these collectibles... still that's no excuse to offer us a random guy, Mr Depression 1981 and a fat gay guy as substitutes.
More to follow....

Iraq=LOTR
Senator Rick Santorum compares Iraq to "Lord of the Rings":
As the hobbits are going up Mount Doom, the Eye of Mordor is being drawn somewhere else. (...) It's being drawn to Iraq and it's not being drawn to the U.S. You know what? I want to keep it on Iraq. I don't want the Eye to come back here to the United States.
In the LOTR, to draw the Eye away from Mordor, Gandalf and Aragorn led the army of Gondor to the Gates of Mordor to draw out Sauron's army and let Frodo sneak past them. This, they knew, was a suicidal move. As Gandalf said: "We must make ourselves the bait .... We must walk open-eyed into that trap, with courage, but small hope for ourselves." (Chapter IX, 'The Last Debate')
So the Senator is saying the US soldiers in Iraq are bait. They're there to die, just to keep terrorists' attention away from the US for a while.

The Departed

Recently saw the latest Scorcese flick, and I loved every second of it. Extremely violent in parts and yet at the same time, quite humourous. Leonardo, Matt and Jack are excellent, but the true stand out is Mark Walberg.... his character is very entertaining. I hadn't even heard much about the movie, but it involves you right from the start, despite its unusual narrative style. Be aware though, there are some homophobic and racist slurs, such as 'nigger', 'fucking homos', 'fucking queers' and 'two-faced faggot'. A bit full on, but so is the violence - which had a bigger impact than some words used. Put it this way, if your offended by words, don't see the movie... however, I find it strange that some people have focussed on that, rather than the in your face violence... which I found way more confronting.
The previews attached on the movie were quite good... a couple I'm looking foward to - The Prestige, Children of Men and A Scanner Darkly.

Airplane!

An anonymous "senior British official knowledgeable about the [hair-gel bombers]" told NBC that there was no threat to airplanes last week, that the terrorists had been under surveillance for over a year, and that UK government didn't plan on arresting these guys until they'd surveilled them a while longer, but moved when they did because of US pressure:
In contrast to previous reports, the official suggested an attack was not imminent, saying the suspects had not yet purchased any airline tickets. In fact, some did not even have passports...
The official shed light on other aspects of the case, saying that while the investigation into the bombing plot began "months ago," some suspects were known to the security services even before the London subway bombings last year.

Gayness Determined Before Birth
A study of nearly 1,000 gay and straight men has shown that the more older brothers a man has, the more likely he is to be gay:"Bogaert found that the link between having older brothers and homosexuality was present only if the siblings were biologically related -- this relationship was seen between biological brothers who were not raised together. The amount of time that a man was reared with older brothers had no association with sexual orientation.
'These results support a prenatal origin to sexual orientation development in men and indicate that the fraternal birth-order effect is probably the result of a maternal 'memory' for male gestations or births,' Bogaert writes in his report in PNAS Early Edition."
Bogaert's theory behind the biological process:"A woman's body may see a male foetus as "'foreign', he says, prompting an immune reaction which may grow progressively stronger with each male child. The antibodies created may affect the developing male brain."
With this news there's little doubt that families with many brothers will be scrutinized (although the photos above are not meant to insinuate anything, simply to illustrate).
It is gratifying to see the mounting evidence that homosexuality is genetically determined. Said Andy Forrest, Stonewall spokesman: "It adds further weight to the argument that lesbian and gay people should be treated equally in society and not discriminated against for something that's just as inherent as skin colour."

Gay Animals and Evolution

Joan Roughgarden, a transgendered professor of biology at Stanford University, has penned a fascinating-sounding book on the evolutionary role of homosexuality called Evolution's Rainbow. This month's Seed magazine features a long article on Roughgarden's theories, which center on explaining why, if homosexuality is a genetic aberration, it hasn't been bred out of all species -- instead, homosexual coupling is more the norm than the aberration when it comes to most animals. As she says, "a 'common genetic disease' is a contradiction in terms, and homosexuality is three to four orders of magnitude more common than true genetic diseases such as Huntington's disease."
Male big horn sheep live in what are often called "homosexual societies." They bond through genital licking and anal intercourse, which often ends in ejaculation. If a male sheep chooses to not have gay sex, it becomes a social outcast. Ironically, scientists call such straight-laced males "effeminate."
Giraffes have all-male orgies. So do bottlenose dolphins, killer whales, gray whales, and West Indian manatees. Japanese macaques, on the other hand, are ardent lesbians; the females enthusiastically mount each other. Bonobos, one of our closest primate relatives, are similar, except that their lesbian sexual encounters occur every two hours. Male bonobos engage in "penis fencing," which leads, surprisingly enough, to ejaculation. They also give each other genital massages.
Basically, at the end of all her theories, she's saying that their are too many animals with homosexual behaviour, and it hasn't been bred out. So homosexual activities must have a purpose... mainly keeping the social order of the group together.
Maybe if Humans accepted gay sex and relationships, we mightn't be such a violent and sexually frustrated culture.

Photographer Harrassment
Thomas Hawk keeps being harrassed for taking photos of a building at 45 Fremont St, San Fransico... I think its funny that America - home of the paparazzi, will let you take shitloads of pics of celebrities, but gets ultra-paranoid if you look twice at a building.Read the blog account of his trials HERE
I've had this happen a few times, ironicly once while I was taking a pic of a Macca's, another time taking pics in a department store... obviosly thought I was either 1 - a competitor trying steal ideas from their layout, or 2 - a thief casing the joint. But least I wasn't assaulted or even told to leave... just told not to take anymore photos. Why are people so paranoid?!?!?!
Scientists Grow Beating Heart Tissue

In a world's first, Australian scientists have succesful grown beating heart tissue. This is the first step to growing your own replacement organs. The benifit to this is that they'll be grown from your own cells, meaning that the body will not reject them like donated organs....
I'm constantly amazed at how quickly our world is changing... and making science-fiction into science fact.

A Sixth Sense for the Wired World
Body modification artists have created another "sense" by implanting a strong magnet in their finger. Because of the density of nerves in the fingertip, a primitive "sense" is created when the magnet reacts to electromagnetic fields. Recipients of the implant report various sensations and found they could locate electric stovetops and motors, pick out live electrical cables and fell their laptop hard drive spinning. Just think about what other senses could be created in the future if things like this became popular.... Sci-Fi is no longer fiction. The whole article can be found HERE
